Policy for Fundraising and Engaging with Potentially Vulnerable Individuals
The Million Project is committed to treating all individuals with respect, dignity, and fairness. We recognize that certain individuals may be in vulnerable circumstances, and we have a responsibility to ensure that our fundraising and engagement practices do not exploit or take advantage of their vulnerability.
This policy outlines our approach to identifying and interacting with potentially vulnerable individuals in an ethical and responsible manner.
1. Definition of Vulnerability Vulnerability can take many forms, and individuals may be considered vulnerable due to various circumstances, including but not limited to:
• Age (particularly those under 18 or elderly individuals)
• Physical or mental health conditions
• Intellectual or cognitive impairments
• Financial vulnerability or insecurity
• Recent traumatic life events (e.g., bereavement, job loss)
• Literacy or language barriers
2. Identifying Vulnerability The Million Project staff and representatives will be trained to recognize potential indicators of vulnerability during interactions with individuals. These indicators may include, but are not limited to:
• Apparent confusion or disorientation
• Difficulty understanding or retaining information
• Unusual or erratic behavior
• Emotional distress or agitation
• Inappropriate responses or reactions
If any indicators of vulnerability are observed, staff and representatives will exercise heightened sensitivity and caution in their approach.
3. Ethical Engagement When engaging with potentially vulnerable individuals, The Million Project will adhere to the following principles:
• Treat all individuals with respect, compassion, and empathy.
• Avoid applying undue pressure or coercion in fundraising or solicitation efforts.
• Provide clear, concise, and easily understandable information about our activities and the potential implications of any requested support or involvement.
• Encourage the involvement of a trusted friend, family member, or caregiver when appropriate, to ensure informed decision-making.
• Respect the individual's right to privacy and confidentiality.
• Promptly terminate any interaction or engagement if there are concerns about the individual's ability to make an informed decision or provide valid consent.
4. Training and Support The Million Project will provide comprehensive training to all staff and representatives who may interact with potentially vulnerable individuals. This training will cover:
• Recognizing indicators of vulnerability
• Ethical engagement practices
• Communication strategies for interacting with vulnerable individuals
• Procedures for escalating concerns or seeking guidance
Ongoing support and resources will be available to ensure that staff and representatives are equipped to handle such interactions with sensitivity and care.
5. Monitoring and Oversight The Million Project will implement robust monitoring and oversight mechanisms to ensure compliance with this policy. This may include:
• Regular audits and reviews of fundraising and engagement practices
• Mechanisms for reporting and addressing concerns or complaints
• Ongoing training and education for staff and representatives
• Collaboration with relevant organizations and experts in the field of vulnerability and ethical fundraising
